  10. COMPATIBILITY STATEMENT
  11. Management Information Control System's BUILDER INFORMATION SYSTEM, 
  12. (BIS) version 4.01 has been tested and is compatible with LANtastic 
  13. version 4.x.

  16. PRODUCT OVERVIEW
  17. BIS is a DOS based accounting and management software system 
  18. designed specifically for the construction industry.  Modules 
  19. consist of general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, accounts 
  20. receivable, inventory, job costing, job billing, job estimating, 
  21. subcontract control, change order control, equipment control and 
  22. union payroll.   BIS is a "Real time" transaction driven accounting 
  23. system.

  26. INSTALLATION
  27. BIS runs under DOS version 3.3 and higher.  The CONFIG.SYS file 
  28. must be edited to include:
  29.  
  30.     FILES=51    (or higher)
  31.     BUFFERS=24    (or higher in multiples of 8)
  32.  
  33. The AUTOEXEC.BAT file must be edited to include:
  34.  
  35.     SET CLIPPER=V10;R64;E0;F51 
  36.  
  37. A LANtastic SERVER supporting BIS requires a minimum of 30 MB of 
  38. hard disk space and if used as a workstation,  requires 450K of 
  39. free program memory.

  41. To install BIS on a LANtastic server,  perform the following steps:
  42.  
  43.     Create a temporary  Install directory:
  44.         Mkdir \<install directory>
  45.     Copy the BIS Install disk to the install directory:
  46.         Copy <floppy drive> \<install directory>
  47.     Begin installation:
  48.         Cd \<install directory> 
  49.         INSTALL
  50.     A menu will appear with two choices:
  51.     1) Shared Files Installation 
  52.     2) Station Files Installation
  53.  
  54.     Select Shared Files.  The BIS Install procedure verifies that 
  55.         there is enough    disk space to store program files and displays an
  56.         error message if additional space is required.
  57.  
  58. To install BIS on a LANtastic workstation:
  59.  
  60.     NET LOGIN \\<BIS SERVER> <User-ID> <Password>
  61.     NET USE  <Available Drive ID> \\<BIS SERVER>\<Install Directory>
  62.     <Available Drive ID>:
  63.     INSTALL
  64.     At the install menu, select Station Files
  65.     A Station Number  will be assigned during the installation.  
  66.  
  67. Access to BIS from a workstation requires this Station Number.
  68.  
  69. Installation takes fifteen to thirty minutes.

  71. CONFIGURATION
  72. Other than the DOS SET CLIPPER= parameter listed above, there are 
  73. no additional steps required to activate the network version of 
  74. BIS.  BIS can be run from any workstation where the BIS Station 
  75. File installation has been performed.  BIS can be configured so 
  76. that programs and data files can reside on different redirected 
  77. (network) drives.  Default LANtastic ACL's and user account 
  78. privileges are sufficient to run BIS.

  80. OPERATION
  81. To start BIS from the WORKSTATION or SERVER:
  82.  
  83.     NET LOGIN \\<BIS SERVER> <User-ID> <Password>
  84.     NET USE  <Available Drive ID> \\<BIS SERVER>\<BIS  Directory>
  85.     <Available Drive ID>:
  86.     BIS.COM

  88. Multi-user access is controlled by a combination of file and record 
  89. locks using the DOS SHARE utility.  Based on the requested 
  90. function, single records (e.g. update a customer record) or entire 
  91. files (prepare a financial statement) are locked.  SHARE should be 
  92. loaded before the LANtastic network.  Suggested startup parameters 
  93. are:
  94.  
  95.     SHARE /L:xxx /F:yyyy      where xxx is 100 times the number of 
  96.                                       stations and yyy is 2048 for every
  97.                                       five stations.
  98.  
  99. When more than one user attempts to access a locked file, the 
  100. following message will appear:
  101.  
  102.               *** FILENAME IN USE... TRY AGAIN LATER ***
  103.  
  104. When more than one user attempts to modify the same record 
  105. concurrently, the following message will appear:
  106.  
  107.               *** RECORD LOCKED - CANNOT EDIT ***
  108.

  110. PRINTING
  111. BIS supports redirected printing without limitations.  Reports can 
  112. be created for output to either screen, printer, disk file or a 
  113. serial port.

  116. SECURITY
  117. BIS provides optional password protection to menu options.

  120. NETWORK DISCONNECTS
  121. If a network disconnect occurs, the automatic recovery component of 
  122. BIS will display the following message to the user after log on.
  123.  
  124.         I show this station already logged on.
  125.         Someone else logged into this station or
  126.         Your System Administrator must run the Station Reset.
  127.  
  128. BIS will execute a recovery procedure from the BIS system 
  129. Administrator account.  This recovery will vary in complexity 
  130. depending on the activity BIS was performing at the time of 
  131. disconnect.

  134. COMPATIBILITY NOTES
  135. Maintain available program memory to at least 486,400 bytes by not 
  136. running unnecessary memory resident (TSR) programs.  Also, MICS 
  137. does not recommend the running of BIS from within Microsoft 
  138. Windows.
